What is dukes in scotland?

In Scotland, a Duke is a member of the nobility who holds the highest rank after the royal family. There are currently three dukes in Scotland:

  1. Duke of Buccleuch - This title has been held by the same family since it was first created in 1663. The current Duke of Buccleuch is Richard Scott, who inherited the title in 2007.

  2. Duke of Atholl - This title was created in 1703 and is held by the Murray family. The current Duke of Atholl is John Murray, who inherited the title in 1996.

  3. Duke of Argyll - This title was created in 1701 and is held by the Campbell family. The current Duke of Argyll is Torquhil Campbell, who inherited the title in 2001.

Dukes in Scotland traditionally held vast estates and were responsible for the governance of their territories. Today, their role is largely ceremonial, and they often hold positions of influence in society.
